Love Among Ashes (Original Short Story)

They were the only ones, the last ones standing on the face of the planet. All around them was gloom and ashes. Fire danced on top of mountains of ash that were once great structures. The sky was overcast, a stretch of gray, dark clouds. All that was gained was burned away, now a thin black powder scattered across the broken ground. All around the last ones standing, groans emanated from the burning wood and from the small fires that never went out.
The two young brothers were the very last living beings on earth, huddled together in front of the tree which shaded them from the unkind darkness. Rain fell and splattered around them, and still the tree protected them. Fire licked away at the ground, and still the two young men held on to each other. For three years they had survived this harsh, brutal environment, and they will survive for many more.
“I will never leave you. Never,” the older brother said to the younger brother.
“I know you won’t,” the younger brother replied. Experience granted them survival. The older brother’s skill in finding food brought them this far, and for many more years, it would continue that way. The older brother moved a wet gathering of hair from his younger brother’s eyes. Both their dirty faces continued to look at each other, their shoulders wrapped in the older brother’s coat. Thunder roared in the distance, and lightning forked down the sky, but the brothers didn’t even so much as flinch. Their eyes remained set on each other. No longer did they fear, no longer did they worry, no longer did they cry. They kept each other safe under one of the few surviving trees on earth. They had each other, and that’s all that mattered.

A Nerd’s Perspective On Star Wars

So, lots of news coming in in just the last month. The Clone Wars animated television series has been cancelled, save for two bonus arcs we’ll get somehow. The animated TV show Star Wars: Detours has been shelved, and all future Star Wars video games have been put on hold. On top of all this, a new animated Star Wars show has been announced, which appears to be a spin-off of The Clone Wars featuring a set of characters from a not-so-good story arc in Season Five.

On Sunday I was thinking about The Clone Wars’ cancellation, and I was beginning to accept it. The last season ended on a good note, and I was beginning to understand the reasons behind canceling the show. It’s obvious that Disney wanted to set aside all possible distractions so that all their focus can go to Episode VII. Okay, fine. Then why do I see this announcement for a SPIN-OFF show? This seems way off, considering the fact that they had already said earlier that the show would focus on an unexplored time period. The show obviously begins during the Clone Wars since the characters presented here showed up in that show. The basic plot that was released was that the characters would be traveling through time, which makes me wonder if R2-D2 will even be with them. This almost feels like a betrayal to me since they cancelled The Clone Wars. If they were planning on making a spin-off show anyway, why not just CONTINUE The Clone Wars?

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by this. We’ve gotten silly shows about droids and ewoks before (none of which I watched, and ever will watch), so this shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, but as a way for Disney to start producing new Star Wars stuff, this is a terrible first impression. Why in the world can’t they just make a show featuring brand new characters that takes place after Return of the Jedi? I would’ve been okay with that. As far as Star Wars: Detours goes, I’m okay that it got shelved. I was honestly not very impressed with what I saw, so it could go either way and I’ll be fine with it.

Well, let me say this. Disney, you can screw up Star Wars, and get your greedy hands on that green stuff you obviously desire, but you can’t take away what has already been given to us. I’m going to keep my Clone Wars DVDs, my copies of the KOTOR games, and a couple great Star Wars EU books, because that’s MY Star Wars, and you can’t decide what will be my Star Wars and what won’t. I will watch your Episode VII when that comes out, but it better blow my mind to the winds. I’ll shut up now.
